I recently made a box for a good friend of mine at work who was retiring & I liked it so much I had to make one for me. This one is mad from a different wood. Not sure what it is. My woodworking buddy Andy seems to think it might be sycamore. I got it off a railroad car at work. The splines are oak and the panels are plywood I got at Lowes. The hinges (which I am not proud of) are some of the same wood as the box but stained with some ebony stain.

I think that turned out well.

I still vote for sycamore. And it looks good with that Mahogany ply.

The hinges? They are OK (appear to work fine) but a little more shaping/roundover on the edges and hide the metal pin. Since they are black, maybe a little Magic Marker would “camo” that metal pin?

It looks a lot better than my second box!

Thanks Andy. I think I will do something with those hinges. I should have used oak. That piece I took the picture of the box on is one of the 2 pieces I have for you. The other one is a little bigger

Good looking box! Has great splines and clean lines. The hinges work fine as well. Well done!
