Well with 2 months to spare I’m finally finished with my sons 3 in 1 crib and dresser!!! Both made from Okoume which is a type of African Mahogany using Wood Magazine plans.
The dresser was modified so that I could use the same bending form on both the crib and dresser head rails. I also widened the dresser to make 6 drawers instead of the open storage space as in the original plan. The dresser drawers were dovetailed using the Leigh Super 18 dovetail jig and full extension soft close drawer slides were used. This was my first time using the super 18 and of the drawer pieces came out perfect. I must say the super 18 lives up to the hype and I highly recommended it. The dresser top was made from a 8/4 thick slab that was book matched to create the top.
The last picture shows the slabs of Okoume that I started with. It’s kind of nice to know you can take something like that in turn it into furniture. I took pictures of the entire crib build that I plan on putting into a photo album to give to him someday so he can see how his crib/bed was built. Unfortunately I got slack and didn’t take as many pictures of the dresser build as I would have liked.
Both pieces were stained with General Finishes Mahogany stain then sprayed with General Finishes Enduro-Var.
