Project Information

My Goddaughter requested a desk and drawer unit for her study as she embarks on an art degree course. Just finished the desk element over the holiday weekend - still working on the drawers shown in the sketchup design picture.

I can't claim any design credit for the desk - its based on one we found when searching for inspiration by Jim Probst (http://www.custommade.com/meander-desk/by/probstfurnituremakers/) and the drawers are (when finished!) designed to match.

The top, drawer fronts and leg inset detail are Sapele with the remainder being tulipwood

Very nice design. I bet she will keep for her kids.

One question. What is the silver post in the back and on the left? I'll take a wild guess at a pneumatic post for raising/lowering a monitor. But what do I know.

Dave - You were close, the silver post is a 'pop-up' set of 3 power sockets (uses a gas strut)

Incredible work, love the power outlets and taking into account how it's going to be used and making the function match the form

You did some really fine work on this desk. It is an excellent design too, so well worth making the effort to build it as well as you did.

Wonderful ! I love all of it : the design, the contrasting woods, your choice of grain, the inlay details. I just have one technical question : how did you taper the underside of the table top ? It seems too big for a table-saw job so was it just hand planed ?
