I have referenced this forum and website several times during this last project. I greatly appreciate reading other postings, questions and answers, It has really helped out.
My 3-1 crib project is completed with the construction, just waiting for my new Earlex sprayer to show up so that I can lay on the clear coat finish. I am plenty nervous about the finish since I have never sprayed a finish before. But I had never built a crib before either and it turned out awesome.
There were two hurdles that stand out to me during this project. The major one was making the cross dowel holes in the edges of the 78” long Full Size bed sides. I first carefully marked the holes and then had a helper holding the pieces up on the drill press. NOT gonna happen that way. So then I spent an hour building a jig that would hold these long boards in place perfectly. The jig was perfect and all the holes came out exactly where i wanted them. I wish that I had made the jig first, and used it on the crib side rails also.
The other hurdle was the darn 2” wood screws. I must have chosen the cheapest wood screws possible. I had 2 of them twist off inside my project. Oh that was very aggravating, but I was able to remove the shank and go at it again with higher quality wood screws. I would never trust the “Hillman” brand of wood screws again that I found at Ace Hardware.
I chose the two-tone coloration based on Jason K’s project that I viewed before I started mine. Thanks Jason for the great idea. http://lumberjocks.com/projects/15574
