Lately my woodworking has been regulated to support status for my other art work. There is so much going on in my studio and I have wanted to blog about it.. but that will have to wait until there is a real break.

But until I thought I would post one of the recent bases I carved for one of my bronzes.. The sculpture is the balance I had to re-achieve in my life by including another person, my partner of 18 years. Nothing is better than having someone you trust hold you up in those times when things are falling apart. Base carved in spalted apple, I wanted it to be most like the figures are balanced on a cliffside, holding onto one another so to not fall off.

“Embrace” it is titled.. and is the smallest 3D lettering I have done yet 1/4”... Had some difficulties carving into end grain is not as easy, it looks pretty rough…but I am content enough to sell it.
~ Enjoy

Looks great to me. I’ve been doing 3D lettering recently, and I know what you mean about the challenge with end grain, and the potential problems when you get down to small text size while maintaining a good 3D height. Well done.

Thanks John. Eventually I learned that a quick saturation of the end grain with super glue stopped the fiber ends from breaking apart, but as you can tell curves gave me some grief and I was really wanted serif lettering. Live and learn.

The sentiment you wrote is as powerful as the sculpture!

I really appreciate artists who can work in bronze … !
