Each year I try to come up with something new for the 4 Artisan’s Fairs that we do from Memorial Day to Christmas. Last year’s entry was a bust (but who knows, it may sell this year!). I have been thinking about all the entertaining that people on Cape Cod do (whether we want to or not!) and what might be useful AND practical and reasonably priced. These cheese and crackers boards were inspired by a trip to Pier One. I just love their bright white dishes and saw these square ones and had to use them in something. The boards are about 13×7” and each contains a slight indentation and frame that stabilizes the dish. I really like the offset dish that stands proud of the board. It is a simple design that depends on the wood to make it pop. I used curly maple with a wenge and a purpleheart stripe and wenge frame on one and zebrawood and purpleheart for the other. I also have 2 more… one that is cherry with 3 narrow purpleheart stripes and one that is walnut with a torquoise inlay in the knot and oak framing. Those are not quite finished yet…but they will be finished for this weekend’s fair.

The cheese and crackers you see are made of yellowheart (cheese) and walnut heartwood (crackers). I did this for the people of this world who have no imagination! i figured if I demonstrated them, they would get the idea!!

I ended up finishing them with mineral oil. I’m not sure that is the best idea so I may try some wipe on food safe poly on the next run… if these sell! If not, I’ll be selling wooden cheese and crackers ;-)

Ellen

Cheese and Crackers! Well if that isn’t one of the most imaginative and ingenious things I’ve ever seen! The trays are beautiful Ellen. They’re eye-catching and attractive. Best wishes at your fairs.

Beautiful idea, Ellen! I love the “cheese” and “crackers” too! You are right that many people need visuals to get the idea. I think the props are excellent!

I hope you do well at your events. It is difficult to gauge what will go and what won’t. I think you have a great attitude and I do hope that these beautiful pieces are appreciated. They are awesome!

Sheila :)

Looks nummy.
My imagination is just chomping on those crackers all smothered in cheese.

Looks really fine Ellen. I see them flying off the shelf.

I bet your creative side has come up with a winner! Do you need a “do not eat” label on the cheese & crax like they put on the dessicant sachets you find in some packages?! :-)

Great idea, Ellen, you sure have a creative way of thinking!
Like the “high fiber” cheese and crackers, too.
