This is a bowl turned out of Lacewood. It is 5.5″ in diameter and 2″ tall. It is finished with the EEE Ultrashine Cream and ShellaWax combo.

Although I’m happy with the final result it was ‘iffy’ going. I found the wood to be very brittle which led to a lot of problems with tear out in the end grain.

Perhaps it was just this piece of wood but I doubt if I’ll rush right out to turn another one out of Lacewood any time soon.

Thanks for looking.

Ted,

Ifound the same results with lacewood. Could you expand upon the EE Cream? I am not with it.

Hello Ted

My experience with lacewood is about the same. It has a texture different then nearly anything I’ve ever worked with. Beautiful, but different.

Chris, sorry about that. Its actually called EEE Ultrashine Cream (has been changed above) and gives a rather nice high-gloss shine when used in tandem with the Shellawax. It is a cut and polish paste wax containing Tripoli powder, an ultra fine abrasive.

Bowls like this inspire me to try my hand at turning. You did a great job.

Nice turning Ted. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about lacewood. I had similar experiences with purpleheart.

Well, it’s nice to know that it just wasn’t me! :) I was rather surprised because about a month ago I had a small piece of Lacewood and turned a candle holder as a prelude to the bowl and it turned quite nice. I guess with the smaller size I didn’t notice the tearouts as much.
