Scrap Wood Box

Project by scopemonkey posted 493 days ago 702 views 3 times favorited 12 comments Add to Favorites Watch

After listening to a recent Matt’s Basement Workshop podcast, I was challenged to see what I could do with those chunks in my scrap box that I normally save for glue blocks or for throwing in the smoker (depending on wood species….). I had an old piece of rather twisted and warped poplar, small pieces of cherry left over from a bookcase project, and a small chunk of purple heart left over from a wood whisperer inspired cutting board (not posted since they are well represented here on LJ) and figured, what the heck. Good time to play around with some machined half blind dovetails as well. This was a fun project since I wasn’t worried about messing up “good” lumber. I hand chamfered the top with my block plane, and carved the purple heart handle. Next, I’ll pull more scrap and get to work on doing those dovetails by hand. Slowly, but surely I’ll get there…..

sweet little box…funny how ppl who don’t work wood complain that we have too much clutter in our shops …if they only had a clue what we can do with cutoffs / scraps !! Nice job using up some of your scraps

Very nice. Architectural, I would say. It sort of looks like a small building to me.

That’s really a nice box. I don’t normally care much for dovetails on boxes, but the half blinds look good.

VG. There’s more detail than ya first think. And the dovetails are a sweet touch.
