Cutting Board Bonanza

So there is a pretty good story behind this. A few of my woodworking students wanted to learn how to use a lathe; the only problem is that our shop doesn’t have a lathe! So I decided that we would raise the money to buy one. We were able to scrounge some cutoffs from a local lumber yard (thank you Forest County Wood Products) for very cheap. We then mass produced these boards and I put out a email to our district a week before mother’s day. They flew off the shelves and I was able to make a trip to Rockler to purchase our new lathe! (featured in last photo)

The boards are made from a variety of Oak, Cherry, Maple, Walnut, and Sassafras. We finished them off with 3 coats of Howard’s Butcher Block Conditioner and included a “How to care for your new cutting board” instruction sheet for those who have never had the pleasure of owning a fine piece like these :-)

Good for you!

The lesson you taught the students by doing this will be more valuable than anything they produce with the lathe.

The world needs more teachers like you.

Wonderful cutting boards! Great work on teaching kids to be resourceful and independent. Everybody can now enjoy the new lathe.
