My audiophile client wanted a place to store a growing record collection.. preferably in a functional piece of furniture that matched the bookcase I made for him a few years ago (see photo above) .... something that would rhyme with the word ‘wench’. Um, a bench?

This client truly appreciates the uniqueness of figured walnut, so I had him help me pick out the boards at my local hardwood dealer. It made him more connected to the final piece and gave a new understanding of how much work it takes it go from hunks of raw lumber to finished art.

20” high, 60” long 13” deep. Tapered legs. Book matched side and back panels. Semi-gloss child-safe poly finish. We found a great knot in one board and put it front and center.

A friend lent me his Festool Domino which made the joinery easy-peasy.

I really, really love working figured wood. Can you tell?

Great job, Love working with this type of wood as well. Such beauty and history telling from the wood. I tend to fill my knots with 2 part epoxy with a drop of black dye then sand them flush. I think it helps with the flow and keeps it smooth. Love the tapered legs as well.

Beautiful piece ! Although seeing those plugs on the top scare me. Please tell me you didn’t just screw the top down to the base without allowing for the natural movement of the solid wood top.

Very cool project! And I still have enough albums left to at least fill half the shelf space! I also have my original 1973 Sansui turntable with the special elliptical needle… Remember when just the needle could cost nearly $100, and THAT was in the 1970s…
