Taking a road well traveled I’m sure, I made my second project be a simple checker end grain cutting board made out of maple and Purple Heart. It turned out a little smaller than I intended because of some table saw cutting mistakes I made. Sanded with 60 grit and then 180 grit sandpaper and finished by saturating with boos mystery oil (the mystery is food safe mineral oil apparently).

Mistakes were made, lessons were learned, but I did end up with a decent looking piece afterwards! No more plastic cutting boards for me. I’m sure this is the first of many cutting boards I will eventually make.

Purple Heart is weird stuff… Wen you first cut it it is this reddish brown color that fades into a vibrant purple in a few weeks. At least that’s what my board did after I squared it and left it to sit (above is brown again because of additional cutting and planing).

Next up… A stool made using mortise and tenon joints. Right after I figure those out!

Good looking board and you sure do learn a lot building your first board don’t ya? I’m still learning too. Just finishing up a big board 17×30x2.5. Learned a lot.
