Baby try square

I have decided to make a set of try squares and I have started with the smallest one of the set, since I already had some brass of the right size. The first step was cutting the pieces for the stock and the brass blade.
The stock is made of three layers of wood (apple and hornbeam), this spared me the effort to cut a precise slot for the blade.

I epoxied the blade to the stock, clamping them against a drawing square. Since I have not found rivets of the right size I have made them with my small metal lathe.

I cut a proper length of 4mm brass bar, turning both male and female rivets from the same piece.

Since I wanted something fancy I have inlayed a losange-shaped piece of cherry in the stock.

I have finished the square with three coats of Danish oil.

Great build, very nice try square. Nice you can do the metal work too, makes the project all that much more satisfying.

Thanks for the generous comments.

Joe, not yet, this is the first; I am looking for some brass of the proper size to make another couple of bigger squares.

That’s very cool. It kind of looks like the plans they have this month in Shop Notes. I really want to build a couple of these.

Thanks Richard

they are quite simple to build, a little precision is all you need; I recommend using a drafting square, another try square or at least a well squared block for clamping the stock and the blade until the glue has set.

Have your say...
