More beautiful figured hickory

This box is made with hickory from the local hardwood supplier. It is very unusual, and saying that it is full of character does not do it justice. It would be better to say that it has attitude. It is very difficult to work with, all of that figure comes from some serious stress build up in the tree. I will post a picture of some of the stress fractures of the cut offs with the next box.

Sorry about the blue cast, took the pictures outside today. Wanted to get these posted in a rush. When its one of the seven nice days in Indiana, you do everything outside.

Box measures 11×13ish and is finished with a base thinned out lacquer and topped with two coats of wipe on poly. The top is curly maple.

Wow!
That is some beautiful wood and you used it very well.
I appreciate the crisp lines and the fact that you chased the grain around the box.
Nicely done.

Yep I agree, it is well beyond “Figured Hickory” This is some mf’n bad butt hickory with a Union Attitude ! Oh, and you’ve turned it into one badass box too ! OK I’m done talking like a N. Fl. Cracker, excuse me please ! do you have more of this m.b.a.Hickory to work with ? Nice, to say the least !

-- If it smells good, eat it ! The pig caught under the fence is the one doing all thesquealing

You have definately created an heirloom piece, I bet that stays in the family for generations. Great Job!

Wonderful, seeing nature worked like that just strikes me with awe. You did a great job showing the beauty in the wood. Looking forward to the next box!

Awesome box. Stunning to be honest. Did you use barrel hinges? I see the mitered relief on the back side of the box, which makes me think you used barrel hinges. Post some photos of the inside of the box if you get a chance, I bet it’s spectacular.
