Hello there everyone, well I got the lathe ready to go and this is what I came up with. I know that this piece is simple but I did learn alot while turning it. Like if tool rest is to high its bad and if tool rest is to low it is really dangerous. The candle stand was going to be larger in diameter but I would let the gouge take a hunk of wood out and I would have to shave it down to get the bad places out. All in all it was a good learing experience. Thanks for looking Oh did I mention that when you let the gouge dig into the wood like I did that it hurts thoughout the entire body.

You picked a tricky bit for first time Woodnut & a job well done. Many turners say spindle turning is harder to do than bowls, so fine job.

Hi Woodnut;
Gouges have a bad habit of redesigning projects. As do skews.
It’s a fine job.

Great turning, live and learn, I’ve learned the hard way a lot on the lathe, and have the scars to prove it.Great job.

Great first turning! I got in the habit of throwing on a 10”-12” piece of 2X2 scrap or a tree branch on the lathe before I begin any project and ‘play’ a bit. Not only is it a great warmup but gives a bit of spindle practise. As my sig says, I make pretty good decorative fire wood. :)

Nice turning, sometimes design changes are made on the fly, even after lots of practice.
