Buckeye Burl Pen No-picture-s No-picture-s Click the pictures to enlarge them

This is a Jr. Gentleman’s with Buckeye Burl and a finish of friction polish, shellac, and some beeswax to shine it up a bit.

This was “Stabilized”, which I guess means that it’s infused with plastic or something… All I can say is it smells funny when turning, and you definitely want to wear a mask during sanding!

It’s also much harder than anything I’ve ever turned… feels somewhat brittle? I did have a chunk split off from the blank when I got down to about 1/16” away from the final size, ended up filling the hole with CA and shavings and CA and shavings, all packed in and then trimmed away after it all dried.

I’m pretty happy with the end result. This was done for my boss, if he likes it, he’ll buy some pens from me to bring as gifts to family in Poland!

Beautiful pen, Ryno. Buckeye burl is one of my favorites for pen turning. Thank you for sharing.

Ryno, it’s a great looking pen. I also made a buckeye burl pen for my boss (former boss). He was a Ohio State graduate some years ago and was on their baseball team…so that seemed appropriate.

Buckeye burl is incredibly beautiful and you did a super job on this one.

Hi Ryno’

Two things;

Incredible looking pen.

Very dramatic photo. I don’t if your a professional photographer, but it would appear so.

Bravo!

Lee

Ryno, I love the BB and for all it makes a huge difference with very sharp tools.

Your boss will love it! I turned one recently out of BB and it reminded me of steer horn when finished.

Thanks all for the nice comments! Is it any wonder I am hooked on LJ, with such a nice community of folks willing to say nice things about the work I’m doing?

Trifern, kudos from you (considering your amazing turning work!) are a real treat.

Napaman, thanks for the nice feedback!

Woodhacker, thank you!

Lee, I’ve done a bit of photography in my day… actually minored in it in college, but that was back in the day before digital cameras were around, and it’s much harder to influence the photos as much as you can with film. Thank you, I’m as critical of my photography as I am of my woodworking!

Grumpy, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Grant, yeah, I’ve found that out… Properly sharpened tools was the first lesson I learned when turning, and it’s especially true with materials like this!

Jockmike, thanks!

TedM, I gave it to him this morning, he was very pleased. Looks like I might be getting an order for a few more!
