This is a piece of semi-green wood that was essentially a practice piece for me.
Turned into a small bowl. No real ideas about what I was making, what shape, etc… it just kinda evolved.
I’ve decided that spindle turning and faceplate turning are way way different!
I believe that this is maple, it’s found wood from a tree cut down by a road crew a while back. There’s a fair amount of sapwood in there, some knots… made for challenging turning, especially considering I don’t have a bowl gouge! my 1/4” round scraper did the trick, albeit slowly…
The finish is simply HUT friction polish.
I kind of like the checking, and there’s some bark left on the edges, the rim of the bowl was falling apart, as you can see… so I shored it up with some CA to keep the rest on.
good for practice, although it will likely live in the shop with the rest of my practices!

Nice Job!
Know what you mean about the differences in spindle and face plate turning. Discovered very quickly that a skew chisel doesn’t work well as the grain changes!
Do what I did with my first one- it is a soap dish on the shop sink.

Soap? You see how small that thing is? I could fit one or two of those little flower soaps in there… probably would make my hands smell cleaner…

Veery neat turning, albeit small. Very small, that is good practice. I’ll have to try a bowl that small, so far the only thing small I’ve turned is a finial.

Ryno,
I have found that when I start a turning with some idea in my head of what it should look like it rarely ends up that way. I know it sounds very new-age or something but you have to listen to the wood.
Nice Job…Let’s see some more :)

Chris,
You know, you’re right… As I saw the wood spinning there, this wide-bottomed shape just kind of came to mind. I’m certainly not all “New-Agey” or anything… but you’re right. You do have to listen!

Invest in a fingernail gouge and have some real fun. Great job on your first one. They keep getting easier!
