This display shelf is red oak, built with scraps left over from other projects (I just can’t throw anything away!).
It is 36” long and 8” deep … just about right for some of the work done by the basket-maker in the family (the second basket from the right was made out of ordinary pine needles).
This shelf is quite heavy, so to hang it, I screwed a set of cleats to the wall with 45-degree beveled tops. The shelf has a ¼” groove on the underside, positioned to catch the meat of the cleat. The cleats have oblong screw holes to provide ½” of vertical adjustment, and are installed so the shelf has about 1” of horizontal adjustment. And there are no screw holes to plug or hardware to hide.

Great job piece for scraps. I like the design, especially the cleat idea. Thanks for the post.

The finish is Danish oil (looking out for my kinfolk!) and 4 coats of wiped satin polyuurethane.

The cross-member is milled to 3/4” with 1/2” through tenons on each end. The two cleats are 3/4” thick stock with one end cut at 45 degrees … they are hidden by the cross-member.
The groove is 1/4” wide and 3/8” deep, set back 1/2” from the edge of the shelf … hard to see if this photo …
The cleats are anchored to the wall with toggle bolts, and when the shelf sits down on the bevel, you get a nice tight fight. We put stick-on felt dots on the back of the shelf and the uprights to prevent vibration.

Thanks for the details on this project. I’m planning on making a shelf about the same size to use for hand planes. Your shelf really looks great. How is your shelf top attached to the cross-member and uprights?
The cleat and groove system looks good. I hadn’t thought about doing something like this, so I think I may use a French cleat with 45 degree bevels on both sides. Thanks for the idea.

The crossmember and uprights are attached to the shelf on the backside with pocket screws
The corbels were glued/clamped to the uprights and underside of shelf.
