Hello fellow LJ’s,

I am quite new to woodworking so try not to be too critical. I refinished these canes for a buddy of mine that was injured over in Iraq. The VA gave him a metal cane that he didn’t like, and he had a couple of cheap pre-finished ones where the paint had faded and he was just going to buy a couple new ones. I asked him if I could have his old canes to use in the shop and he happily gave them up.

I showed up at his place a few days later and gave him back his old canes with a new face on them. He was very pleased and it was definitely worth the few hours of sanding, burning and staining.

I finished them with linseed oil and gel stain but am concerned if this will be enough protection for them. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for looking guys

Cameron

Very nicely done! I particularly like the flame pattern.
I don’t know anything about finishing a cane, so I’ll leave that to someone else.

Good example of a good friend.

As a current cane user – well done. The finish should be fine. Poly would be a better choice, but what you have is better than what he had before. Nice job and jesture.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the comments. I am prepping another cane for him and I’ll give the poly a shot this time around.

Very nice work keep up the good work.

In doing some canes for wounded vets, I wood burn their unit insignia, military branch, and sometime their ribbons on it.
One thing I never do is charge them! They have paid enough.
