In thinking about a wedding gift for my wife (as of 06/07/2008) I wanted to build something that would last for a long time and be something that she really liked. She loves to write; she loves antiques and loves anything made from mahogany. I put those three together and came up with a reproduction of a 19th century English writing slope. I started the project in November of 07 and finished it a week before the wedding. Not having any plans made it pretty challenging, so I had to do some research on this site Writing Slope before and during the build. I actually had to have some brass parts hand made in England, b/c no one made them anymore. I had the top brass plate hand engraved with my wife’s married initials on it.
It is made entirely from African mahogany with solid brass hardware. The writing surface is leather that I dyed green and cut to fit. It is finished with 4 coats of ARM-R-SEAL SEMI-GLOSS then two coats of paste wax with steal wool in between each coat.

REALLY A NICE PIECE. I`M IMPRESSED WITH HOW YOU FOUND THE
NECESSARY HARDWARE. THE DIMENSIONS SEEN TO BE RIGHT ON.
I`M SURE IT WAS A CHALLENGING PROJECT. I BET YOUR WIFE REALLY APPRECIATED IT.
THANKS FOR SHARING IT.

Very nicely done, I have pictures of a very similar antique writing desk that is sitting in my ‘to do’ pile waiting it’s turn. Hope mine comes out half as nice as yours.
A lot of care and love (not to mention time) has gone into this and it shows.

I’d missed this one originally Puzzled, but so pleased I caught up with it. What a delight. All good wishes for the competition. Those secret drawers are a joy! Just need a few dozen golden sovereigns to complete the job.

well done that man!
I suspect that with the right pubilicity you could create a niche market for your writing slope / box! Keep up the good work.
