Alright! I have seen a lot of cutting boards on the site lately and they all seem to be inspired by The Wood Whisperer, Marc Spagnuolo. Well, so is mine.
When I realized that I was gonna go to at least 3 weddings this summer I had to come up with something practical for my friends and brother, but also on a budget. I have actually just started in woodworking and have been blessed with a friend who has a complete work shop. This is my first project so I thought I would follow the given steps, except when it came to the first gluing I put the pieces in the “wrong” order. I say “wrong” because as most of you know there is no such thing as a mistake in woodworking, just creativity.
This cutting board is made of Maple (which has to be my favorite wood due to the amazing grain and the fact that I’m Canadian) and Purpleheart. It measures roughly 12” X 16” and is 1.25” thick. I bought the maple rough cut 8/4 and was able to get a fairly reasonable piece, but the purpleheart was only available in HUGE lumber or in 2” blocks, so I glued 4 blocks together.
So here is the piece before the routing and finishing. There will be more to come, but different designs.

That maple end grain looks fantastic. I like your pattern, too. It’s got a nice symmetry, without being simplistic.
