Just a simple cake decorating turntable I made for a friend. It’s made from cherry, walnut, maple, and padauk. Just some scraps I had laying around. The edges are treated with a 1/4 inch roundover. The bearing comes from Lee Valley, and is virtually all plastic. I attached it by roughing up one side with some sandpaper, and gluing it on with No More Nails. I’m not sure how that’ll hold up, but I guess we’ll see. The finish is pharmacy mineral oil (my favourite finish for food-related projects).

Making this required making a circle cutting jig for my new bandsaw, so that was fun too.

Hopefully I’ll get a cake out of this deal too!! ;)

Nice work and gift… Fun project and good way to use scraps.

Nice! How did you make sure the bearing stayed center when you glued it on?

Rodnall,

I had a hole drilled part way through the turntable to locate it on my circle cutting jig. I just aligned that hole with the centre hole of the bearing by eye and pressed it into the glue carefully. It isn’t actually perfectly aligned, but its only off by about 1/16 inch, and you can’t really see that unless you’re looking for it.

Pretty cake stand! Like the stripes and the wood colors. Very lucky friend!
