Another walking stick, sadly, not as feminine as the last. However interesting to do.
It wasn’t the easiest project to do as I had a couple of false starts with choosing the incorrect type of sticks to work on. As I found out not all wood is great to carve in detail. The apple branch I thought would be good wasn’t and the bit of birch I had kept was full of holes. As it turned out the recently fallen Grey box gum was the best. It was still green and after each day of work of would return it to the box filled with sawdust to prevent it from drying out and cracking. (That worked really great). This wasn’t the easiest to carve by any means as it had plenty of figured wood, like small burls, whorls, and knots. However it did hold detail well once i was able to get my head around all those grain defects !
It had been carved with a specific person in mind, hence the unusual choice of design. Once finished I painted the carved bits with a wash of brown paint, just so there was a subtle difference between carved and not carved. Then coated it with a couple of diluted coats of white shellac. Just so there was very little colour change.

(Wanted to add a video but didn’t know how on my phone.

Outstanding! I love the little carved chains. The whole thing has a great charm.

-- I just got done cutting three boards and all four of them were too short. (true story)

Nicely carved and great idea! I also use washes of brown, sometimes to deepen shadows, especially on a cane. I’ve recently been using some of the Briwax colored waxes for a similar effect. Looks good!

Wow – Theresa you are quite the artist! I really like this piece…..Since my knees went bad, I find myself using a cane to maneuver around lately – I love the look of this one.
