I finally finished the second book shelf (as per our interior decorators request). I had quite a wait for the damned glass. I fixed the door by cutting all 4 corners with a very fine razor saw and re pegging the joints. While waiting for the glass I built the fire place mantle. That was a fun project, but I wish I would have used end grain for the tenons on the bottom side of the legs. Why is that learning curve always 90°? I secured it to the fire place with 90° brackets on the back and inserted and screwed to the brick. I’m finishing a wall cap for a short pony wall between the living room and the stairs, then it’s on to the console table. I’m thinking of trying Cherry instead of the Maple. I’ve been told it doesn’t blotch as bad as Maple (even with conditioner) ?

Alright, I’ve looked at your pictures several times, and I see a beautiful project :). I’m not sure about what the change is you wish you’d made, but in my opinion, it looks great the way it is.

That mantle is a big upgrade over a plain brick facade. You’ll enjoy that for many years to come, I’m sure. Nice work!
