Some advanced but not too punky rot was happening on this 5 by 11 inch board – a sing stripe right down the middle of one long side of it. I decided to cut in in half and make two small bowls.
Sanded to 480, finished with Watco brand Butcher Block Finish.

It’s about the thinnest walled stuff I have turned so far, and that was risky. But I did stabilize the dark spots with CA glue at the start and again when I had it close to finish thickness.

You did a really nice job on the bowls. A wise wood turner (Capt. Eddie) once told me that the only people that really appreciate super thin pieces are other wood turners. The end user will want a little more heft so that it is now perceived as being too delicate to use. I’m not trying to say that yours are too thin – I think they are perfect – just don’t worry about getting your projects too thin :-)

I agree with you bill Bill on that thinness issue. I watch Capt Eddie on YouTube and appreciate his style and his knowledge a lot. They actually ended up thinner than I wanted because of the tear-out on dark areas.

Pretty bowls! The dark spots added nice accents to them. Finish made the grains really pop. Great turning!
