This is a simple toy box that designed by combining features of several other boxes I saw online. I used a frame & panel concept to keep it light, and included a cutout that runs most of the way across the front so “little fingers” won’t get smashed (or my fingers, for that matter). Rather than making a full lid, I decided to only have the lid run across the front half of the box, again, to cut down on the weight of the lid.

Ok- so I know what most of you are thinking… that there’s no compression hinge on the side. I’m not trying to be a deadbeat dad by not worrying about Meadow’s safety, but, with the lid weighing so little, and the cutout on the front, I decided against putting the extra hinge on there. Also, when the lid opens fully it sticks out further than the back of the piece, so it can rest “gently” against the wall behind it.

All corners and edges were rounded over for safety, and to match the rest of my living room. Wood is Oak, panels are 1/4” Birch, stained in Dark Walnut and finished with 3 coats gloss Poly. I picked up the handles at Rockler, and had to file down the screws since they were made for 1-1/4 doors. Glides on the feet help to move it around when the small things make their way underneath!

Really nice build. Well thought out.

Good looking well built toy box. I like the relief so the little fingers won’t get smashed and the rounded corners are a good idea for safety.
Nice work Tooch!

A wonderful toy chest! Like the extra features, the cutout and the half lid for safety, a well planned design. Excellent work!
