I had an idea for a box with a tambour top. Through an LJ search I stumbled across this project posted by Gerry (TheDane) It was detailed in Sandor Nagyszalanczy’s article in the April 2011 Issue of Woodworkers Journal.and after following the link and seeing the youtube tutorial, I knew I had to make one. Still pictures do this no justice since the top is activated with the opening of the drawer. The biggest challenge is minimizing the resistance within the slot and the top. Wax or hard soap helps. For traction I drilled shallow holes on the bottom filled with heavy dobs of silicone caulk for the feet. If it takes 2 hands to operate, it ain’t right. (saw that one on etsy)

This is nice, Jim. It’s very clean and the contrasting wood looks great.

Really nice work.

Is that birch and walnut burl veneer on the ends?

Wow! You definately have these down pat! I haven’t seen boxes with tambor tops before but I’m gonna check out that link you posted as these look interesting to build.

Do you, by any chance, have the full size templates to share? I have tried to get them through Wood Workers website but it seems they are not available anymore.
