Here’s a little reference rule I made…it’s 6” long, each “block” is 1” square. A fun little project to play with the new hand plane.

Nothing special, just oak and some stain.

For the details, click here.

Thanks for looking!

Cool, my grandfather had one of these in his pocket all the time.

Excuse my ignorance, I would like to know the use of this gnomon.

mariva57 it’s just a reference ruler. I put it next to something so that people know how big the object is. In this case, each square on the gnomon is 1”. So it’s 6” in length and you can see how long something else is by looking at it. Here’s an example in use: the picture of my antique plane in this blog entry has the gnomon there for reference.

Is this one of your projects? Hand plane with Gnomon.

poopiekat they are fun to make and have…more classy than just a ruler laying next to your work! Even classier if you have exotic woods to make it out of (or exotic stain pens like I used).

thelt I wish! No, I have no affiliation with that. But that’s one beauty of a hand plane. The only thing I have that comes close is this.

Looks cool! A handy project to make and the best part you got to use the new hand plane! Can’t beat that!

One very handy and useful tool. Like the wood and stain. Well done!
