Went and had a 7’ slab of maple milled. Its 3 1/2 inches deep and 13” wide (9” in the middle). Took about 2 weeks to sand (20 hours) and a few coats of poly. I notched out the bottom side to fit two 1/4” L brackets for support. And I have 2 pieces of maple to conceal the brackets cut from the same wood with the same treatment. Very pleased with the final product, and my first live edge project! Lots of fun and I think it looks great….but I suppose the most important part is how pleased my wife is, lol!. Anyhow, just wanted to share!

It makes a really nice mantle. Congratulations.

Love the live edge. That will look great above the fireplace. Happy wife, happy life. Great job!
