Here is a workbench that I built recently. It is roughly based on one of the designs in Chris Schwartz’s book. I included a “leg” vise for the face vise. I was going to use a quick release vise for a tail vise, but bought the wrong one. After being frustrated for a while, I decided to go without for a while. In it’s place I bought a couple of Veritas’s wonder dogs.
The bench is built out of Douglas fir from a local box store. I think that it will work OK, but I’m initially a little disappointed with how easily it seems to dent. It also is a bit sappy. Time will tell if my choice of wood was appropriate.
This bench is definitely a work in progress. Some day I’ll add a planing stop, a sliding dead man, and maybe even a tail vise. Once I get a chance to use it a bit, I’ll figure out what I need and where to add it.

There have been some very interesting benches posted lately, and this is one of them. I never really paid alot of attention to benches until my nephew decided he wanted to make one. Now I’m seeing lots of ingenuity and craftsmanship. Well done.

Very nice. Almost exactly what I’d like to build for my own bench.

This is a great looking bench. It has all the necessities, but the construction looks simple enough for a klutz like me to handle. Fir may be a little soft for this application, but not everyone can go to the corner lumberyard and pick up maple or beech.

Very nice Ben. I’ve not seen the leg vise before. I can think of a lot of ways I could use a vise like that.
I agree with Charlie, fir is fairly soft for a bench , but you you have great craftmanship.
Thanks for posting it.

Ben; Really nice bench! Good design and execution. I see good things coming off that bench.
I actually prefer a softer wood top on my bench. The benchtop dents instead of the precious project I’m working on. And its relatively easy to reflatten the benchtop sometime down the road.
Thanks for sharing.

Very nice.
I also used DF for my bench and did not realize how soft it really is. So it will dent, I will live with it. Maybe a 3/4” maple top coat later if it bugs me too much.
I really like the leg vise.

The bench top flush to the legs is a nice feature. I know Chris recommended Doug fir in his book. But thought it was to soft for a work bench. So, Thanks for clearing that issue up. I would like to see more detail on the bottom of the vise.
Thanks for sharing.

Sweet! It may not hold up to FUBARS like maple or beech BUT it will always be around barring fire or chainsaw.
Nice job.
always,

Well done. I am about ti embark on this same build myself. I have the lumber already stickered in my shop and I can’t wait to start the build. I only hope that mine comes out half as nice as yours.

Nice work.. What made you go for the leg vise vs. a standard face vise?
