These were our pinewood derby cars for my son’s last year as a cub scout. He wanted to do submarines, which immediately popped an idea in my head for a “dad car” idea to enter in the adult race. Once I found the knex action figures, it was on!

The stand was the cutoff corners from the “steps” cutting board that i reassembled as a proper resting place for the Sgt Pepper’s figures. The logo was just cut from plywood scrap and epoxied into the base. The knex Beatles are hot glued to the base just to hold them in place.

My only disappoint, ent was that only one person recognized it, which blew me away – what kind of world do we live in where everyone thought it was Spongebob related? Sir McCartney would be so let down.

My son did the tactical sub with minimal guidance. The planes and rear fin are mortised into the body, and he drilled the periscope in himself, as well as mounting the wheels and painting. You can see places where the clearcoat caused the sharpie to run on both.

That yellow submarine is awesome!!

Yes, it’s a sad world, not many people is listening the classics today, and you can’t imagine what kind of crap they listen here in Argentina…

I like both of them. The soda straw periscopes are very fun. I suppose you can’t blame people born since the turn of the last century to be familiar with an animated movie from over 4 decades back.

Great project, I wish I still had my old Cub Scout Pinewood.

G’Day “Gianni”, This whole “pine wood derby” thing is very interesting.
From my knowledge we don’t have anything like it here in Australia; the cars I’m seeing on LJ’s are just great though I think the dads are having way more fun making them.
Cheers from On top DownUnder, crowie

For the kids, I ezpected as much… For the dads, mostly 40-somethings, I would’ve expected them to at least recognize the cheery goodness of the Yellow Submarine.

Have your say...
