Well its kind of sad to see this project come to a close but happy that I have a nice bench inwhich to work apond. This weekend I finished the beam and applyed the finishes. The first finish applyed to top was two coats danish oil follwed by a BriWax application, the base recieved a mixture of 1 part boiled lenseed oil 1/2 part fast drying varnish and 1/2 part woodfiller. Thank to John White editor and designer of this bench and to all fellow jocks that supported and view this process….Blkcherry

one word for you… WOW….

I have to confess for the longets time I’ve been dreaming of making one of those 4*4 legged, thick maple slabbed, expensive screw vise benches, but to be honest you’ve got me reconsidering. It’s a shame I didn’t snap pictures of my old bench before I gave it away due to my relocation, it was made out of 2by lumber, and to be honest, it was pretty freaking hideous, stable, heavy, reliable, and freaking HIDEOUS.

I have a couple of questions though. Sice storage space for me is a priority, do you think the integrity and functionality of this desing would be hindered if the stretchers were lower so you could fit a cabinet there?

Also, If you don’t mind me asking, your time aside, how much did this project end up costing you?

Great work!!!! I can’t wait to finish this freaking transition of mine so i can get back into it.

Estley I was quite relutated to build this bench at first but the more I research this bench the more I like it for the following reasons, value, space allocation in a small garage shop, and the incredible article and video John White posted in FWW . When building the bench I add a extra stretch to later add a cabinet or shelve for storage so I can see that you think along the same lines. As far as cost of the bench I can honestly say at a whopping 200.00 it is a termendous value compared to some of the other woodworker benches. Man hours involved came in under 50 hrs. I hope this help anyone think of make this bench because this is the spirit of this fine site…good luck Blkcherry

Amazing workbench! I hope that you don’t mind, but I have some questions of my own….
clamps – the pony clams i know have fixed handle, and i think this will not work well as it can be above table plane. what clamps did you use?
horizontal beams – i am fan of wedged joins (tannon and mortice with wedge holding the tannon) do you think it will work?

-- The woods are lovely, dark and deep, but I have promises to keep...

Moshel, I used the pony 1/2 inch clamp as per plan directions. You will have to make stop blocks to wedge the work piece away from the clamp fixtures. As for the wedge clamping I’m amazed how study it hold the work piece. Thanks for viewing Blkcherry

Very, very nice. That is one fine looking bench. I know what you mean by finishing a project that you have spent so much time on. It is a wierd feeling, both accomplishment and trying to let it go.

Again, fantastic job. I have only heard good things about that design.
