Cherry Cabinet

Project by Tony posted 526 days ago 899 views 8 times favorited 32 comments Add to Favorites Watch

Here is the latest to my collection of projects.

The cabinet measures 1225mm (48”) wide, 1016mm (40”) high and 420mm (16 ½”) deep. The primary wood is Black Cherry, secondary wood is Silver Birch, the flat panels are Finnish birch plywood with cherry veneer. The knobs are walnut. The doors and drawer fronts are solid cherry

The veneering of the plywood was undertaken in the shop, and the knobs are hand turned (getting 9 knobs exactly the same is not that easy as a part time turner)

The drawers have a solid cherry front, whilst the sides and back are made from Silver Birch and the base is Finnish birch plywood.

The project time was about 150 hours from concept, through design, build and finishing.

The cabinet sanded to P400, 2 coats of hard wax oil applied, and left for a week to fully cure, then lightly dry sanded to P1000, the cabinet is then finished with 2 coats of Fiddes Cherry supreme wax. 1 more coat application of wax is to be applied next week, then its ready for delivery to the customer.

That’s as nice a finish on cherry as I’ve seen in photo’s. I am interested in the panels and how you accomplished the shape of the panel edges using veneer.

Phil . I made a mistake in the the text, the doors are solid wood, the sides and internal panels are veneered with cherry.

The hard wax oil helps to highlight the grain and when dry gives a uniform surface for applying the coloured wax – the wood itself is not stained, but the hard wax is.

The piece still has a little more time to wait in order to balance out the colours of the diferent parts of the project, some parts of the project have been finished before others, but a month or so in sunny weather should harmonise all the pieces.

Elegant yet restrained design, beautifully executed: this will be an heirloom, or should be. I’m jealous as usual.

Tony, absolutely stunning, love the color, the wax really did work the color out very nicely. Also the knobs are just right. One question…what kind of hinges did you use on the doors, they look half round in the picutre? Again, a piece to be very proud of.

Jim.

The hinges used were LAMELO DUPLEX HINGES – designed to be cut in with your biscuit joiner.

I used these hinges for “INSET” doors, I found that the biscuit joiner did not give the accuracy that I wanted and was also difficult to set up , so I made a small jig and used a router – a lot faster and easier to set up.

The video show how to mount overlay doors – this works a dream!
http://www.lamello.com/en/downloads/application-videos/wood-joining-system/additional-uses/cutting-grooves-for-hinges.html?0=

I bought the hinges from Woodworkers Supply http://woodworker.com/cgi-bin/FULLPRES.exe?PARTNUM=947-303&search=Hardware%20Hinges%20-%20Cabinet, but they are available widely in the USA
