The theater in our town was built in 1931 and is on the National Historic Register. I was lucky enough to be commisioned to build new front doors and the paneled surrounds. I built the 7 doors out of white oak. For the cores of the doors I laminated plain sawn white oak, and mortised and tennoned the joints, Then I milled a 5/16” veneer of qtr sawn white oak for both sides and applied with type 3 glue and lots of clamps. The stops were routed in and thermo-pane saftey glass installed. The doors and new jambs where mortised to use the original bronze hinges and The doors were installed with new trim and panels. I would like to think these doors will last as long as the originals.

Big job, looks great, I’ve never seen that many clamps on a glue up before.

The doors were finished with 4 coats of amber shellac with 2 top coats of exterior water based Helmsmen urethane All the finishes were selected by the building commitee for the Theater. The one thing going for this is this bank of doors is recessed about 12’ under the facade of the building. By the way, you can never have too many clamps lol
