Mom's Mantle on a budget.

I’ve been promising mom a mantle for ever and a day. I have NO idea when I actually promised the mantle or if I was just told that I promised her. Either way – Here it is.

Cedar fence pickets on the skin. Framing 2X4’s split in half for the structure.

Above hearth opening, on bottom side of mantle is hardy board spray painted black. I added a layer of thin ripped cedar so it would match up flush with the sides and back.

You can see from the images that I did not have a single flat place to rest the mantle. For each leg, I added 4 adjustable felted slides. I a\was able to screw the down tight so the two legs rest securely on the hearthstone.

To attach it to the wall, I simply secured a level cleat to the wall with 4 toggle type nuts and 4 quarter inch bolts.

I left most of the top OFF the mantle so I could attach it to the cleat with some screws. After that I finished skinning it out and we remounted the TV above it.

I’m not sure what these joints are called where the sides of the boards over lap each other so I’m guessing Lap joints?? That’s what’s hidden from the naked eye.

Mom thinks I’m incredible. You all don’t tell her otherwise please. ;) Thanks for looking

Great job. Mom will give you plenty of free promotion for this.

As you know, Moms are the ‘Best Customers in the Whole World’.

So did she get the 10% family discount? :-)

Well done, my friend.
