A quick attempt at being special

A friend asked for a special box for a small boy with lots of medical problems. The catch was that he was being shipped out again for treatment. Timing is everything. I had just got some different types of wood into the shop. Since I only had a couple days I didn’t get it quite the way I wanted. I used brass hinges. Hate them. I really prefer wooden hinges. There’s no trays inside. That was by request. Because of problems with his hands they felt it would be too tough for him to deal with a tray. I believe the bottom is cherry. The lid is a walnut ring with mesquite inside. All splines are red cedar. It has 3 coats of wipe on poly. I would have preferred 3 or 4 more but didn’t have the time. I am sure this won’t appease the box Gods. I just hope it’s special for a little boy.

Thanks for looking

Nice, and the gesture was a good one. So what it is not on the top 5 of the BEST? I think the recipent will think it is and at the end of the day thats all that matters…

I promise that little boy will cherish it! You didn’t show the hinges so I can’t make an ugly comment about them! LOL. You are very kind to do a “short notice” box as busy as I know you are. I’m betting that your photos don’t do it justice.

I didn’t show the hinges because I thought they were ugly. I wish I had it back and make wooden hinges for it.

Your work on your worst day is better than mine on a good day Monte….lol I always knew there was a soft mushy core in you somewhere, really deep down…Good build for a great cause…well done

Monte, I work with small children every day and I can tell you that this will be a hit. They love to get things and especially like the people who make things for them. That was some nice wood you used.
