This is a glider that I secretly built for my wife for her birthday. She was really surprised when she saw it on the front porch. It is made entirely of cypress. I searched for a plan but I could not find anything that I like. I finally found a picture of something I had in mind and made some modifications. The arms were made by using bent lamination. I used mortise and tenon joinery for the majority of the construction.
I am not completely finished, as I still need to plug the screw holes in the seat and add an outdoor stain to it. (My wife wants a little more color.)
I bought the glider hardware from Rockler and I am very impressed on how well it works. It glides very smooth and without any effort. I’ve built a glider before with a homemade mechanism, but it didn’t glide nearly as well as this.

Excellant job, supurb attention to detail. The arched arms are a very nice touch.

This project of yours looks great. I have 50 bf stickered, covered and air drying on my back porch for a garden bench out of a recent FWW issue. What kind of adhesive did you use for the joinery? What kind of finish do you plan to use? I also like your glider design. It would be hard for little hand to get into the workings unnoticed. Good job.

Nice work. I was wondering where you got your cypress and how much it cost. Also is the glider hardware meant for exterior use? I’m around GR all the time and don’t know any cypress suppliers. Thanks

Thanks for all of the nice comments.
TomK: I used Titebond II for all of the joints. I’ve had good luck with it in the past. I plan on using an exterior oil finish, such as Cabot’s. I don’t want a film finish that I would need to sand off and reapply every few years.
Hozer: I’m not sure if the hardware is meant for outside use or not. I guess only time will tell. I buy all of my lumber from Johnson’s Workbench. They give price breaks to members of the woodworker’s guild, which is a pretty easy organization to join. I believe I bought this lumber for around $2.50-$3 per bf, depending on the thickness.
