I made this a few months ago using some old fence slats from an old bed and breakfast in my hometown. The house now belongs to my inlaws. There is no technical joinery, but the wood itself gorgeous! I got the door knob and plate from the house as well. This is my favorite thing I have made so far. It has a history behind it, and the fence itself was over a century old before we took it down. There is no telling how old the wood itself is. This in itself is a testament to how durable and resistant cypress, and not to mention beautiful. I lightly sanded off the natural grey patina, and put three coats of semi-gloss poly. I was amazed at how it turned out. The box attached is cypress also, but not near as old and all I could find that almost matched. Im itching to cut down one of my cypress trees now and drag it to my buddies saw mill.

No stain at all. I’ll post some pics tomorrow of the lone fence slat of what it looks like before sanding and poly and after. I’ve got to get to bed. 0230 comes early!! I’m not sure if all cypress does this, or if it depends on where it grows, or age because its old growth. I’m sure soil conditions could play a factor. But, the box part on the rack was newer cypress fence from the same house and it turned a beautiful red as well. I’ll have to research that a little. The wood looked nothing like this before the poly. Give me a minute and I’ll post a before poly pic of this project.

That really looks great…! I like old cypress and have used a lot of sinker but I haven’t got any of the old outside and weathered cypress.

Here is a pic before I put poly on the box part. I already had one or two coats on the door part in this pic, but I did that long before I decided what to make out of it.

Here is a pic after the first coat of poly on the box part and another on the door. The poly was still wet and real glossy. The project pics arent near as shiny after it dried. I had to reduce the image size on the second pic. 5mb limit.

Id love to get some sinker cypress. We have quite a few old sinker logs in a creek behind my Dads land, but we cant pull them out. The State wont let us. There is a few old hand cut pines in that creek too. Man I’d love to have one of those as well, soaking in that ole deep black swamp water for hundreds of years. Thats got to be some beautiful wood!
