These boards were made for a knife maker friend in exchange for a custom forged knife. Each board has 6 2” X .5” X .25” rare earth magnets with 27lb of holding force. these magnets are no joke. they are set about an 1/8” below the surface to give good holding power for even the biggest cleaver. Decided to do a sliding dovetail cleat to hold them to the wall.

He specializes in kitchen knives so the first one I wanted to personalize a bit. It is made from bloodwood, wenge for the handle and the blade is curly ambrosia maple. The second one he wanted to be natural edge and it is from the same ambrosia maple and an unknown exotic wood.

Thoughts comments critiques welcome!

You can buy rare earth magnets online from all sorts of places. Heck, even Amazon sells ‘em.

Incidentally, a 5/8” disc rare earth magnets makes a great stud finder (or, well, stud screw finder). Just scan it over the wall and when it sticks to the wall, there’s your stud. :)

Very nice job. Clever idea with the dovetail mounting.
