Here is a traditional style mantle clock that I recently finished.
This particular clock is the prototype for a whole series of family clocks that I am working on, and is based upon a purchased plan and hardware pack from Klockit.
http://www.klockit.com/products/sku-ATKINS_Mantel_Clock_Kit.html
The case, built from ¾” and 5/4”red oak, uses hidden mortise and tenon joinery to create the upper and lower chambers and thus very few metal fasteners (screws) were required. I truly like the traditional early American lines that this piece presents.
The beautiful Hermle mechanical movement installed easily into this design and emits the wonderful (and surprisingly loud) Westminster melody that I really enjoy.
The Hermle movement and clock face provided by Klockit are top notch, though I must add that I was disappointed by the quality of the hardware (hinges, mag.. latch, knobs, etc) included. For the next piece in this series, I will hand pick my own hardware.
I experimented with some of my own staining and finishing techniques and jury is still out as to how happy I am with the end result, but in the end a beautiful and lasting piece that will be treasured for a long time.
Thanks For letting me share

Trev,
This is a beautiful clock. I like the design of this clock. The stain and finish looks good as well. How did you finish it?
Thanks for the post.

Trev,
You did a great job, I like the fact the you tried to stay away from using fastners as much as you can. I don’t see why any one would not want this sitting on their mantle
