I had a slab of cedar cut off the side of a log about 12” x 8 1/2” x 4”. I mounted to a face plate and turned flat to turn a grove to mount to my chuck. I started to turn it round but My wife said no to leave it a rectangle and with the shallow recess in the top. Guess what I did? Exactly as I was told Haa Haa. She has never wanted me to finish anything I made from cedar as she says she likes the smell so it won’t be finished unless she does it.

I asked her what would you put in such a such a shallow recess. She says pine cones. OK I says. So I guess I have a pine cone platter for want of a better thing to call it.

It is made of cedar and 11” x 8 1/2” x 2”

Thanks for the comments guys.

Well I don’t often ask her opinion on what I turn until I’m through with it but I had a little indecision at how far to whittle it down so I asked her. She has a lot better eye for things than I do so I said why not. Since she liked it like it was I just left it that way and put the finishing touches on it.

Jeff I am indeed a lucky man. We used to do all our woodwerking together with me constructing and her sanding and finishing. Since I have gotten back into WW we have started keeping our Moms which are 87 each. Both are essentially wheelchair bound and both have had strokes so she doesn’t have much time to spend with me in the shop. We both are just about house bound because of their condition but it could be worse so we are lucky as they could be bed bound.

As Capt Eddie says keep on makin shavins.
