My little organ building shop found itself in need of some table space and something to catch long rips from the table saw. Problem being? I was broke. So a fast hunt around the shop found some orphaned organ pipes which were from an incomplete set….In case you were wondering, wooden organ pipes are STOUT. four walls of fairly thick material…perfect for table legs! various other scrap materials were employed, the top is 3/4” plywood topped with 1/4” tempered hardboard and the whole thing was orange shallac’d until it screamed for mercy (which is how most older organs and organ pipes are finished, so it seemed appropriate) it’s solid, flat, and level, and I don’t ask much more of it than that, so here’s for being cheap and using the materials at hand. :)

Looks like it should do the job great. Great use of materials at hand.

What wood are the pipes usually made from?

I’d like to make a small pipe organ. Any plans available?

Thanks for the comments everybody!

GaryK : Depending on the region of the builder and the period most wooden pipes are either made from sugar pine or (more recently) poplar. nothing too exotic. Building even a small cabinet organ is quite an undertaking but it’s certainly doable. I don’t know of anybody who’s done drawings for anything worth doing but dig around on Raphi’s page http://www.rwgiangiulio.com/ and you’ll get a sense of what you’re in for, maybe even enough to draw up plans. I’d be happy to look those plans over if you like and make sure their fit to sing. Raphi’s page got pretty specific if I remember, but If you can’t work it out from Raphi’s material just drop me a message and I’ll send you some more technical stuff. Cheers!

That’s a great looking assembly table, especially for being done on the cheap!

As far as Gary is concerned, I have come to the conclusion that he is an alien from another planet whose engineering and construction skills are far superior to those of mere earthlings. If he says he wants to build a pipe organ, he’ll do it. :-)

Well Stanley I’m afraid it doesn’t look like much yet lol. Before you build an organ of this style there’s a long period of pipe hoarding and repair that needs must precede the fun parts, but I’ll keep everybody posted.

This is a nice addition to your shop. Outfeed tables like this are essential tools for most shops. Nice use of “scrap” materials as well.

Well done.
