Love the look of cherry. I understand it will darken a bit in time.
Permit me to point out that the cabinet offers minimal security. Do him a favor and buy him a heavy steel gun locker or safe. Do yourself a favor by his keeping them secure to pass on to you.

I was going to something similar for one of my guns. How did you mount the rifle to the box?

Knothead- He has a heavy gun safe where he keeps the guns most of the time, he just wanted to display the rifles in his basement when he’s home. I guess he understands the risk, but knowing him an intruder wouldn’t probably make it to the basement ;).

Dougin- I just cut out pieces of wood with a hook and covered it with a piece of leather for protection. Simple but looks great.

This was one of my very first projects and I enjoyed making it. I would like to make a similar one to collect antique fishing lures.

Nice job. Looks beautiful. Will this sit on a mantle or table?

It mounts on the wall via french cleat.

“knowing him an intruder wouldn’t probably make it to the basement ;).”

That only works if you are home. Very few break-ins occur when the home is occupied.

Great looking cabinet. I have my dads old old single shot 12 ga. Would like to build a cabinet to display. I have a gun safe and have mixed feeling about displaying it. It would look great over the mantle in my living room.

Post a pic of the finished product, because the in-progress pics look like a very nice piece!
