How to do nothing with this DO NOTHING machine
For a 2012 Christmas white elephant gift I built this Do Nothing machine. It has a body of Oregon Douglas Fir but the handle is made from a fig branch turned on my drill press since I didn’t own a lathe at the time. Note the “start” and “stop” buttons on the side. I also made a silly little video to show the gift receiver how to do nothing with the Do Nothing machine.

I love this, great idea. I have two kids and something like this could be almost anything.

I can imagine lots of requests from others

Great idea. I’ll have to make one of these for my nephew, I think…

This is not “do nothing machine”, this is trammel of Archimedes or ellipsograph. The handle trajectory is ellipse.

Yep, I used mine to draw ellipses for the base to my bandsaw box.

But ellipses are the best form of doing nothing!
Not round, like doing something exactly the same again.
Not square, for who wants to be square?
But elliptical? it’s always coming at you with a different angle.
Those that don’t understand really don’t give a fig, or even know how to turn one.
So there.
Fine work Dale, it just needs an added pause button so that one can momentarily catch their breath.

Great little idea, but lately all of my machines seem to resemble the title, or maybe it is just me. Thank you
for sharing.

This inspired me, so you will be remembered when I post the one I am working on.
