A Box A Box A Box Click the pictures to enlarge them

(first of all, I made this on Thursday, PRE bandsaw/routers/blah blah blah).

Thursday, things just weren’t going as planned so I was sitting at home doing not much of anything and I thought: “I want to make a box. Just a box. Any box.” And so I did.

I decided that because it is my box that I can make it however I want and it doesn’t have to be pretty and it doesn’t have to be well made, and it doesn’t have to withstand a lot of abuse—it doesn’t even have to stay together longer than it takes to take a picture of it!! It’s my box. (I kinda feel like Obi right now: It’s my wood and I can do what I want with it!!)

Anyway… I had some 3/4” pine that I had bought before I decided that scrollsawing on thinner wood was much easier so that is what I decided to use.
I cut the sides, top, bottom I glued and clamped them together and then I cut some leather and wrapped it around the joints. The leather part was the hard part. Do you think I could get it to cut straight? No way. Do you think I could get it to line up right? No way. Do you think I could get the joints of the leather to match correctly? No way. Do you think I put it on the lid the right way? No way. The lid now has the leather edging on the bottom instead of the top—makes a nice cushion for the lid, though.

I haven’t decided how I want to attach the lid. I think I”m just going to glue a smaller piece of wood to the inside and let the lid just sit on top. That’s my plan but I haven’t gotten around to it yet. Too many other things to do.

Oh, and besides the struggles with cutting the leather, the hardest part of the whole process (Thank you Ethan) was to ensure that no droplet of glue was visible to the naked eye. Now if only the edge of the leather was perfect.. argh… THat darned learning curve again!!! But my perfectionism is getting better :)

Picture 1: front view
Picture 2: side view (dah) hehehe
Picture 3: one of my daughter’s cats checking to see if she can see any glue.

Nice work Debbie

hehe as I was reading your second line i was starting to worry about what you thought the cat would put in there!! hahaa
But now that you mention it—this is perfect. I have wanted to make a box for their food. (Hey.. slow down Debbie—the cats aren’t staying! NO NO NO… well… No, I’m serious.. they aren’t staying.. I mean it.. .. well… )

So I’ve now decided (thanks John). It shall now hold the cat food. I can sit the cat food dish on top of the box, keeping it all in one place.
Hmmm maybe a wooden cat dish, oh.. what if it is secured to the lid, making the handle.. and then I just pick up the lid, fill the dish, put the lid back on!!
I”m sure there’s a flaw in that plan somewhere, but, hey, it’s only 6 AM, my brain doesn’t not have to be functioning on all cylinders until 6:30.

Nice job Deb, now you gotta quit beating yourself up with each procject and look at the positive. By that I mean what did you learn, what could you have done different . Sit back and critique it yourself. Yes we can help, but you also have a brain, so use it. Take the input and mix it with what you come up with and then you’ve really learned something. Hope you don’t take this wrong I think you’re coming along great. Like I said you’re your own worse enemy. mike

Hello Debbie;
—-I mean look at this box from the cats point of view; that cat’s already decided this is a great piece of ‘wood art’!!!

GODSPEED,
Frank

ah Mike.. so my colours are showing are they? drats.
It’s something that I have been working hard at and I’m obviously slipping back into old habits with this new undertaking of “woodworking”.
So here’s the deal: it’s easier to be mediocre than fail at being good at something.

You have reminded me of my lesson AND that I had actually come to a realization last fall that I am really a perfectionist at heart. “If you can’t do it perfect, do it wrong”. If you don’t strive to do your best then you won’t be disappointed with your accomplishments. When it comes to writing and facilitating workshops and life guiding etc, I am perfectionist all the way and proud of it. In this area I am GOOD!!! But when it comes to a hands-on creation, I crawl back into the self-doubt.
So, I thank you for jogging my journey (and no, I didn’t take it in the wrong way).

Frank: thanks. I like how it looks and I’m sure my cats will like it too (Oh did you see that?? “MY” cats.. No, No. No.. Jenn & Tim’s CATS!!! . Hopefully with the drill press up and running, and the router up and running I can start putting the boxes together in other ways besides just glue.

Nice box Deb! I’ve always thought that leather and wood were great materials to use together. Are you going to try another one with those materials? I hope so.

now Karson… don’t hold back!! Tell me… tell me now… and the big surprise with the table will be if we actually get one made

Mark: there are times when a casket might be appropriate!! I have one plant that they have complete eaten away … and the one cat did NOT like the smell of the pine when we first brought it into the house. He marked his territory 3 times! He is banned from the basement.

And I’m glad you enjoy my thinking process. As I said, my brain gets spinning some times, trying to sort everything out that you guys mention in your blogs/project discussions.

Phil: Thanks :)

Debbie:

I was thinking of a minature copy of the Greene and Greene table made with a jigsaw.

So if you want a big one also, Rick can go for it.

Have Fun.

What did you use to cut the leather? Did you use a utility knife and a straight edge? If not, using these may help you make that straight cut that you are looking for.

Thanks everyone.

Os. for cutting the leather I used a metal ruler as my guide and a circular cutting wheel. I think my problem (not that it should have been a problem) was that I was using a chunk of thin leather rather than the deerhide that I am used to working with. But the metal ruler should have done it.

Rog: Yes, the knots. My box kept changing size as I tried to get that knot located in one of the side pieces. It was the focus of the box.

Don: thanks, as always. I’m getting better and more adventurous. Just wait til you see what I have planned for today!! (hhehee what do they say about “Plans” All good plans of mice and men sometimes go awry

he’s “fixed” as well but it sure hasn’t stopped him from soaking the floor by the table saw..
darned cat.
But I have to say that the pine has dried out a lot now and the cat was downstairs the other day when the electricians were here and he didn’t leave any surprises so I guess he is ok with the wood now.
