I became a Grampa this last Nov so my focus on woodworking has migrated to wood toys for the new grandson. I ran across this old Readers Digest woodworking project book at Goodwill a few weeks ago and found this amazing Lego play table plan. The plan stated that I would spend as much time painting as I would in construction. BOY, they weren’t wrong an that. It’s 9.5” off the floor, perfect for a young child. The top is designed to hold 4, 10” sq base plated to build from. The legs are built and cut in such a way to resemble lego blocks. The plan called for 3/4” birch plywood for the top and 3/4” birch pieces for the legs. In my neck of the woods, birch is not a cheap material so I substatuted cheaper (and much softer) western white pine. The only other change I made was the lip of the table top. The plan called for it to be butted up to the plywood’s edge but I rabbited it to help prevent the delamination of the top layer of veener from peeling with use. The next project in the book I want to make is a toy box. I hope you enjoy seeing it as I know the grandson will when he gets older and comes to visit. Grampy’s gonna have a LOT of wood toys for him to play with when he comes to visit.
Thoughts and comments are always welcome. If interested and want to make this I can share the book information. Probably out of print as it was a ‘96 publication.
