So I’ve been researching antique tool chests for a year or so and then I got the anarchists tool chest book and put down on paper what I was going to make to fit my set of antique tools.
I didn’t go by the book but used it as reference. The one thing I’ve always wanted to do was learn how to veneer and inlay, so I took a shot at it with this. Both the inlay and base veneer are mahogany; one dyed the other natrual.
First I dovetailed the poplar shell, hammer veneered African mahogany on the interior and edges. Then dyed the base, shellacked and waxed the veneer. I was Worried that the dye would run so i put the finish on before I inlaid diamonds.
1. Cut diamonds @ 22.5 deg
2. Layout the divided spacing
3. Tape the area
4. Trace the diamond with an exacto
5. Pull the inner cutout and chisel the veneer out
6. Fit, hide glue, hammer, sand and shellac.
7. Remove the tape and revel at the results.
I plan on veneering the lids also so stay tuned.
