Red oak and walnut. Unfinished. Great for whacking chisels or anything else that needs persuasion.

beautiful craftsmanship…..better than any that I’ve seen for sale !!! Will you be applying some type of finish to it to bring out the grain further ?

What angle did you use on your faces? I would like to make one like this, too. No turning involved for us who a lathe-less.

God Bless,

Now this is a nice mallet. I am sure it would come in handy as a stress reliever. :)

Nice job.

Looks good to me. Great for smashing invading spiders. :-)

I’d love to know a little more. I just printed a FineWoodworking plan for a mallet similar to this. Might be the same. I also have a plan that calls for lead shot in the center. From the looks, you laminated three boards for the head and chopped a mortise for a wedge. Is there anything in the middle such as lead to deaden the blows? For that matter, anyone thinks that matters (the deadening or facing the face with leather or such)? How much would you guess it weighs? Looks awfully pretty. I’ll have to check back on this one.

Thanks for the comments. The inspiration came from Lee Valley. http://www.leevalley.com/shopping/TechInfo.aspx?c=2&type=a&p=43969
I skipped the taper and added the walnut wedge and pins instead. The whole thing weighs about 12oz and took just a few hours to make. I think I used 10 degrees for the angles because it looked nice. As for finishing, we’ll see. Perhaps a light coat of danish oil.

Nice mallet just the ticket for fine cutting. Really, you can’t go wrong using one of these. You won’t deliver to much power and if you deliver not enough what does it hurt? mike
