Here are four strange birds that prove I do have a whimsical side. I often don’t know what result I’ll get when I first put my knife to a birch branch, but sometimes I end up with nameless birds like these. I hope they’ll bring a smile to your faces! Thanks for taking a peek!

Neat little birds. Most of the time the wood will tell you what it wants to be. Some folks may call you crazy for saying this but it is true. Unlike projects made of boards when you whittle or turn just listen to the wood & it will tell you.

I’m like you in that when I put something on the lathe seldom do I have a preconceived notion of what will come out except if it will be a bowl or candle holder etc.

I love these! You should be designing characters for Pixar.

Leonard,

Thanks for your comment. I learned how to whittle from Chris Lubkemann’s book “Whittling Twigs and Branches” and recommend that book if you’re interested. He goes into great detail with instructions for whittling roosters, and I just use my imagination to create birds other than roosters. I haven’t tried to sell these, but I’ll send you a couple if you like and you can pay me a little something if you like them. Just let me know where to send them. Thanks again.

Hi John. Thanks for the info on the book. We don’t have a big variety of trees in FL.

Hi John. I received the birds. I really like them and will put them with my other carved and turned things. Are you married, kids, grankids?
I’ll get something in the mail to you soon. Where did you get your little name tags?
