Looks to me like it was one stressed tree !

Pic 1: Box lid pivots at back.
I like making the lift-tab integral.

Pic 2: Smaller box, lid panel made from an offcut from the 1st. Lift lid.
I know it looks like pic1 is too yellow, but that is closer to the actual color than pic2 is.

No pic: a 10-cm box from an even smaller offcut of same.

Pic 3: Added as an afterthought .. to show another lift-tab that’s harmonized with other features.
I call that box “dot squiggle”, after the pattern in the veneer. Wish I had another piece of it.

Those boxes are wonderful and I love those designs.

Very nice boxes..
The quality craftsmanship of a piece of work is always the most important goal to achieve…and a fantastic piece of wood can only enhance it further…

Beautiful boxes. You did a great job of displaying the beauty of the wood.

Another great project. Love the way you scalloped the handle into the ripples. Please post a little about yourself in the profile and add a picture of your shop. Nice to have you here on LJ!

Volpeveneers posted:
Weird burl veneer boxes. I’m pretty confident that the wood specie in box 1 is Laurel Burl. The color, cluster and ripple figure are typical of Laurel.

LG replies:
Thanks, volpeveneers. That sounds likely.
I got quite a lot of veneer from a retired cabinetmaker, after possums got into the ones he had stored in his garage against the ceiling. They would have got pretty hot up there (Brisbane).
His “better” veneers were stored more securely, but the “trash” (yes he was throwing it out) is not too shabby. That is to say, some are gorgeous pieces, some in quite bad condition.
I have learned flattening.

Cueball,
Show my shop ! that would be embarrassing.

Have your say...
