Table built from a single 6 inch thick by 38 inch wide Slab of amazing Broad Leaf western Maple.
Slab was cross cut at 6 feet leaving just enough 6 in slab for me to re saw,(by hand) and make sides of base
from , stretchers have soft arch and flow threw the sides. Slab was ripped , cut in half with three different hand saws then glued back together with hidden spline to assure 24” to 30” base sides stay stable and flat for a very long time! Top is 36” ish by 6 feet and there is a slit curve to one end aka 36” one end 35” 11/16 on they other
I love the flow with the grain.
Note I inserted 3 knots in the table top to fill holes can you find them?
Bench is made from next slab in flitch as well as a 8 foot mantel top.
Finish is sprayed satin urethane ,waited three weeks then cut polish.
Thank you
Dan

Gorgeous wood! I’m wishing I had it for some guitars. That’s a lot of resawing. How’s your arms? lol
Very nice table! Nice job!

That’s an absolutely beautiful table and bench, I love it. So western broad leaf maple (aka big leaf maple), you say? Amazing.
How exactly does one resaw a slab that large by hand? Giant bow saw and two people?

Dan,
I like where it ended up. Was this a commission or inspired piece?
Nice work!

it was both inspired and commissioned I do it a lot> when I started most people could not see the grain or amazing Spalt . Client told me size and basic needs , then I show them wood while asking questions of taste etc. get into there heads a bit. wife picked this wood on my pushing it ! Husband was very nervous at first.
in the end they are super happy and I did two other builds for them completely different one walnut , the other cherry.
Yes Broad Leaf Maple -here in the Fraser valley BC well all of BC in the timber trades that is its name aka Big leaf Maple. they are Huge and highly figured here also the one off Sumas and Vedder mountain’s are hard as rock.
Thanks
